08 September 2026Following its debut in the global Top 10 for non-English-language series and in the Top 10 in 30 countries, Lovesick once again brings this iconic story to the forefront, brought to life by Mexican talent more than 30 years after the original text was published.
The project became a reality thanks to Mexican artists, creatives, and technical staff, as well as hundreds of local vendors who participated in various stages of production. Filming in three states involved hiring local talent and services, booking accommodations and transportation, and engaging communities in preparing filming locations, thereby generating economic activity in each region where the series was shot.
The Impact of Lovesick in Numbers
This series served as a major driver of economic development, job creation, and community collaboration:
+3,500 people contributed to the production.
+625 members were active participants in the cast and crew.
+600 local vendors were hired to support various phases of the project.
+93 days of filming spread across 3 states: Puebla, Mexico City, and San Luis Potosí.
More than 125,000 kilometers were traveled in the search for and selection of filming locations.
10,800 hotel nights were booked throughout production.
More than 500 original garments made from natural fibers by the costume team.
Over 60 musicians collaborated on the creation and performance of the soundtrack.
The Beauty of Puebla Reflected in Mal de Amores
The state of Puebla was key to the historical setting, lending its streets, buildings, and landscapes to bring early 20th-century Mexico to life. From the splendor of the Municipal Palace to the iconic Palafoxiana Library and the picturesque corners of Atlixco overlooking the volcanoes, the state provided the visual authenticity the series demanded.
This production required months of meticulous logistics and casting of extras in municipalities such as Cuautinchán and Izúcar de Matamoros, and involved the support of local collectors to provide period props, such as an original 1903 Ford Model T, demonstrating that the region is a fundamental pillar both in terms of on-screen beauty and the region’s economic growth.
Behind the Soundtrack of Mal de Amores
Throughout the series, music plays a fundamental role. A soundtrack was created specifically for this series, an initiative that allows the show to reach new audiences through different formats. Featuring original music by Víctor Hernández Stumpfhauser, a period-appropriate selection curated by Annette Fradera, and produced by Camilo Lara, the album highlights performers such as Vivir Quintana—with “Dolerás” and alongside Lila Downs on “Cuando nos vemos”—as well as Elsa y Elmar, Ximena Sariñana, Ely Guerra, and Gaby Moreno. Each song lends a moving power to the story.
Bringing Ángeles Mastretta’s work to the screen opens the door for new generations to discover Lovesick, a classic of Mexican literature, to connect with its author, and to revisit the book from a new perspective.
About Lovesick
Based on the novel by Ángeles Mastretta, Mal de amores is set in the turbulent, pre-revolutionary Mexico of the late 19th century. Emilia Sauri is a woman who fights for her convictions and refuses to renounce her feelings, confronting the limitations imposed by her status as a woman and the danger of loving two men madly: Daniel Cuenca, an adventurer and revolutionary who filled her childhood dreams, and Antonio Zavalza, a doctor seeking peace in the midst of the civil war.
