Netflix Partners With the Institute of Immersive Media on a Virtual Production Training Initiative for Women in the European Creative Industries

Virtual Production

Netflix has partnered with the The Institute of Immersive Media (IIM) to launch a new training initiative, with the aim of equipping women working in the creative industries with skills that can be applied to the cutting-edge field of virtual production.

Virtual production is a technique that allows creatives to combine traditional, live-action filmmaking with digital technology, and can connect all parts of the production lifecycle. The Women’s Virtual Production Training initiative will arm women in Europe currently working in the fields of cinematography, VFX, animation and beyond, with the tools to apply their expertise to virtual production; growing their skillsets, and expanding their knowledge.

As an approach that is expanding rapidly, virtual production brings with it opportunities for the development of new skills and roles within the television and film production industry, where a disproportionately low number of women make up the workforce in Europe, as well as globally.

Today, applications have opened for professionals in Spain, Poland, Germany and Austria to benefit from hands-on training and online learning that will take place in Berlin, Warsaw and Madrid. The training will be led by seasoned experts in virtual production, and will focus on all aspects of the discipline to provide an in-depth experience and hone the techniques required to work across high-end TV and film production.

As well as enhancing the skillset of women working in the creative industries, the training initiative will also create opportunities for networking and the sharing of ideas among a community of peers.

IIM's founders said:

"We are thrilled to be partnering with Netflix on this initiative - our primary mission centres on addressing the gender gap in VP through accessible education, mentorship and training for women By providing training  in VP techniques we aim to increase representation in VP expertise across Europe. We see this as a truly brilliant opportunity for existing women in film and entertainment talent to learn from some of the best in the industry - diversifying their skills and broadening their career opportunities for the future."

Anna Mallett, Vice President, Production, Netflix EMEA said:

"Virtual production is unlocking so many exciting possibilities for creators, giving them more choices and freedom than ever before.

“At Netflix, we're committed to growing the skills of industry talent. Our partnership with IIM will support women who are already excelling in their fields to maximise their potential as they continue to do what they do best, as well as fostering a professional network of peers."

The Women's Virtual Production Training initiative is part of Netflix's commitment to support women working across the audiovisual field in Europe, giving them new opportunities to expand their skills. Previously, Netflix has partnered with the European Women’s Audiovisual Network to grow film producers' knowledge of series production, as well as running a creative pitch contest and workshop in collaboration with the European Producers Club.

To apply for the initiative candidates should visit iim.one/vptraining  and submit an application form by August 3 2025.
