23 August 2023Today, Netflix shared the teaser video of upcoming Indonesian series Cigarette Girl, revealing it onstage at the Content Asia Summit 2023 during a session hosted by director Kamila Andini and Netflix SEA Content Director Malobika Banerji.
Netflix’s newest Indonesian series Cigarette Girl will start streaming on November 2, 2023. Based on the novel by Ratih Kumala, the period drama tells an epic romance amid the evocative blend of flavorful spices to create the perfect kretek cigarette set in 1960s Indonesia.
Helmed by acclaimed directors Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah, the series is produced by BASE Entertainment with showrunners Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson. Ratih Kumala and Tanya Yuson also served as screenwriters along with Kanya K. Priyanti and Ambaridzki Ramadhantyo.
The teaser gives a glimpse of what’s to come in the series, including how Dasiyah (Dian Sastrowardoyo) is focused in concocting the perfect formulas for clove cigarettes. Amid the delicate movements of picking flower petals and rolling the cigarettes, we could see some intense scenes, romance and drama coming in the series.
"This is a story set across two time periods with many characters. It's a family drama and a romance, set against the backdrop of the Indonesian kretek industry. This story has been with us for many years and we're so excited to see the characters come to life and have their stories told to many different audiences," Kamila Andini said.
