Netflix, along with the British High Commission in Ottawa, recently brought together the diplomatic community, politicians, staff and press to talk fact (and fiction!) at a special panel and reception for The Diplomat Season 2.

The panel featured The Diplomat story editor and associate producer Anna Hagen, who was joined by David Prodger, Chargé d’affaires a.i. for the British High Commission in Ottawa, and Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States. The conversation was moderated by Mercedes Stephenson, Ottawa Bureau Chief for Global News.

With over 90 guests in attendance, the panel explored the intricacies of what has brought the second season of The Diplomat to Netflix’s Global Top 10 for several weeks, focusing on how the show creates a fictional world inspired by the real-life field of diplomacy. Panelists talked about the show’s incredible filming locations (including the actual US embassy in London) and Hagen shared how the writers craft believable storylines that blend fictional crises with realistic diplomatic scenarios, all while weaving the drama, political intrigue, and complexity that have come to define the show.

Ambassador Hillman and Prodger each touched upon their own experiences, sharing some behind-the-scenes insights into the real world of diplomacy. They also expressed their appreciation to the show’s authentic depiction of the unpredictable and often chaotic and fast-paced world they navigate. You can catch all the action of The Diplomat Season 2 — now streaming only on Netflix.
