07 October 2023São Paulo, October 7, 2023 - Netflix, in partnership with the São Paulo International Film Festival, announces the establishment of the Netflix Award for the 47th edition of the festival, which will take place from October 19 to November 1. It is the first time, after years of showcasing national and international films, that the company will present an award at the festival.
The award will select and acquire the distribution rights of a Brazilian fiction film participating in this year's festival that has not yet had its licensing rights negotiated with any streaming platform. The winner of the Netflix Award, to be announced on November 1, the closing date of the festival, will be acquired by Netflix and screened in over 190 countries.
"We celebrate this new partnership with Netflix and the support it brings to Brazilian cinema production. Among our missions is to support and promote Brazilian film production by showcasing national films and providing visibility to new talents, and the award reinforces that," says Renata de Almeida, director of the São Paulo Film Festival.
"The creation of this award represents a milestone in our commitment of over a decade to Brazilian audiovisual content, and more than ever, to national auteur cinema. It is another step in our journey of collaboration with creators and professionals in the film industry," says Gabriel Gurman, director of Films at Netflix in Brazil.
The responsible jury will be composed of a team formed by Netflix and professionals from the audiovisual market. "We are looking for bold and innovative films that contribute to our mission of offering a plural and diversified selection, with works that address important themes in our society and, at the same time, engage with as many people as possible," Gurman adds.
