Can a Feminist Girl and a Self-Described “Nice Guy” Learn to Love Each Other? ‘My Crazy Feminist Girlfriend’ Main Trailer, Key Art and New Cast Unveiled

Netflix has unveiled the main trailer, key art and announced six new cast members for the live-action film adaptation of My Crazy Feminist Girlfriend, premiering globally on December 3.

When it was published in Korea, Min Ji Hyoung’s novel “My Crazy Feminist Girlfriend” became a bestseller almost overnight, drawing a huge response for its striking title and its story of how people live today. Described as “a feminist version of My Sassy Girl,” it made just as much noise in Japan as well, selling out and going back for a reprint soon after the Japanese edition went on sale. Now, it comes to life as a live-action Netflix film.

Mei Nagano(Burn the House Down)stars as “the girlfriend.” She cut off her long hair for the part, capturing both the poise of a woman who has decided to live life on her own terms and the loneliness beneath it. Taisei Kido(First Love)plays Haruki, a man with a lovable charm that’s hard to resent. He portrays the boyfriend’s hopeless side —  a self-described nice guy who unconsciously imposes his own idea of what is “normal” and his own ideals. Keiichi Kobayashi (A Girl & Her Guard Dog, Love is Light, and He Won’t Kill, She Won’t Die) directs the film, bringing his experience crafting love stories ranging from the fantastical to the realistic. He carefully captures the pair’s shifting emotions and vividly portrays a relationship that makes you laugh, then catches you off guard.

The newly released trailer catches up with Haruki seven years after his sudden breakup with his first love, as the two reunite by chance — only he barely recognizes her. She’s become a feminist, nothing like the devoted girlfriend he remembers. Determined to win her back anyway, he instead clashes with her at every turn over what counts as “normal.”

Netflix has also revealed six new cast members who bring color to the story. Junki Tozuka appears in the trailer as Kippei Ikee, Haruki’s best friend and closest confidant, who has tried to bring the pair back together since their college days. Maho Nonami plays the editor-in-chief of the publishing house where the girlfriend works, and Sotaro Tanaka plays Akitaka Takahata, a prominent author she edits. Hiroki Konno plays Haruki’s boss, Manami Higa plays the girlfriend’s older sister, who keeps watch over the pair, and Yumi Aso plays Haruki’s mother, who longs for him to marry soon.

A feminist girlfriend and her self-described nice guy boyfriend go head-to-head over gender, society and clashing ideas of “normal” in this romantic comedy. My Crazy Feminist Girlfriend premieres December 3, only on Netflix.

STORY

She was always laughing by his side, “the girlfriend.” But after a certain event, Haruki is abruptly dumped by his first love. Unable to forget her, she still lingers in his heart even after seven years have passed. Haruki is now an office worker at a stationery maker. One day on his way home from work, he runs into a women’s demonstration. The person who calls out to him there is the girl he loved so much. But the woman before him is nothing like the sweet, devoted girl who once healed him. She has become a feminist!? When Haruki says he wants to date her again, “the girlfriend” flatly cuts him off: “No way.” Whenever they meet, battles break out over what is “normal” and what goes without saying. Can two people whose values don’t mesh at all become a couple once more?
