28 February 2022Can two people make a connection through the sound of their voices alone and get engaged before without seeing each other? That is the question posed by Love is Blind: Japan, the novel matchmaking reality show based on a new method for finding a marriage partner that was started in the U.S. The gripping finale of this series has now finally been released.
<Spoilers included below>
Separated from the outside world, 24 men and women spend 10 days going on blind dates inside “pods” where they are unable to see the other person’s face. The experiment yielded eight fledgling couples and after getting engaged, going on vacation and living together, there were two couples that made it to the altar and said “I do.”
First is Midori and Wataru. They became a couple after Midori actively pursued him in the pods and they spent a vacation together. However, they struggled to come to terms with the differences they felt after actually meeting. Following Midori’s mother’s advice and a second proposal that expressed how Wataru felt while living with Midori, the couple pledged their love to each other at their wedding ceremony.
The second couple is Motomi and Ryotaro. Deepening their relationship by talking in the pods and writing to one another, they were able to spend relaxing times together after meeting, despite never having dated anybody like each other before. When he met Motomi’s family, Ryotaro dyed his trademark blonde hair black to express his sincerity. He was able to open up to them, and the couple vowed their love for one another at a wedding ceremony under the watchful eyes of their families.
Must-see post-show conversation with these happy newlyweds!
After the wedding ceremonies, the two radiant couples return to meet with show hosts Takashi Fujii and Yuka Itaya. After their lightning-fast weddings, the newlyweds look back on their ceremonies that were over before they knew it. The couples appear happy living together along with their pets, and this post-show conversation shows their completely different auras and shared enjoyment.
“I realized firsthand that love is blind!” says Motomi with a smile. Midori reflects by saying, “What I experienced there, and what I gathered from it, are like a marriage road map.” Listening to them talk, you must hope these couples live happily ever after.
Couples Q&As after the final episode
The finale of Love is Blind: Japan has finally been released. Ryotaro and Motomi, and Wataru and Midori decided on their marriage partners without even meeting them, but what were their reasons for making such a bold decision? We hear about their feelings for one another, their preparations for marriage, and other recent updates!
(Ryotaro & Motomi)
Q: What was the deciding factor that made you decide to get married?
Ryotaro: I thought she was a really kind, loving woman and had qualities that I felt I was lacking. I felt like I could always be myself with her. More than anything, we complimented each other well. We’re the only ones who feel this way. I don’t think the people around us get it. (laughs)
Motomi: There is a comfort that I cannot fully express in Ryotaro’s gestures, expressions, words, and aura. When I heard my mother say that as a married couple we would make up a complete person, I felt a feeling of confidence and resolve deep in my heart that I could take his hand and spend my life with him!
Q: What do you like the most about each other?
Ryotaro: How she will do anything for others! I also love how she fully accepts me for who I am!
Motomi: I like his kind and calm nature, his sincerity, emotional fortitude, smile, and style. I can go on forever listing things I like about him, but I can’t pick my favorite. (laughs) He has conviction in whatever he does, and always considers and respects my feelings. I can really trust and respect those sorts of human qualities!
Q: And what about marriage?
Motomi: I am thrilled to tell everyone that we were legally married on January 11, 2022! We have once again visited our parents, introduced each other to our close friends, and are relieved that we are now officially husband and wife. While I’m still a little embarrassed to have the same family name, I am really thankful to the people around us for supporting us each day. I hope that we can live happily together, enjoy good health and keep smiling!
Ryotaro: Our drama-like time together ended quickly. Since we returned to reality, we have been really busy trying to catch up with everything we missed. Thanks to everyone’s support, we were able to get married! Thank you.
Q: What do you look forward to in your married life?
Ryotaro: There are still many things we haven’t experienced together, so I would like to slowly create new memories together. I can picture us having a happy home life!
Motomi: I’m looking forward to everything the future has in store! Life is full of peaks and valleys so I am sure there will not only be times of happiness, but also sadness and hardship. But we will be able to face those times together rather than alone, so I’m excited and happy to experience this!
Ryotaro & Motomi: Lastly, we would like to say that we are happy from the bottom of our hearts to receive the many celebratory messages from not only Japanese viewers, but viewers from across the globe. We really felt that it is possible to marry someone you got engaged to without even seeing their face! We are really glad we appeared on Love is Blind: Japan. We would like to express our thanks to everyone who supported us and everyone involved in the making of this show!
(Wataru & Midori) ここから
Q: What was the deciding factor that made you decide to get married?
Wataru: When I learned that she received a lot of support and advice from the other women during the presentations, I felt that she had a quality that made people naturally want to support her.
Midori: A moment that stuck with me was when I learned we were using the exact same wireless earphones (same brand and model). After that, I learned we both liked electronics and had similar ways of using our money, so I began to feel like he might be the only one for me. Later, when we were living together, his words and actions gradually convinced me that he was a really cool person, and led me to decide to marry him.
Q: What do you like the most about each other?
Wataru: I like that she’s strict with herself and communicates with me as an equal without spoiling me or making me feel like there’s an age difference. She may seem pushy, but she never forgets to express her gratitude to those around her. I also like her stylish appearance. (laughs)
Midori: I like that he doesn’t create rules in the home. On the first day of living together, he told me that whoever had the free time or felt up to doing household tasks should just do it. If we made rules about who would make dinner at what time, we would end up fighting or talking about it each time we had to break those rules. I really like and respect this theory that not making rules means not fighting.
Q: What are your plans for legally registering your marriage?
Midori: We plan to register our marriage on my birthday in March! We respect each other’s work commitments and treasure our family time, together with Lupin.
Wataru: I have moved out of the undesirable place I was residing and am now living happily with Midori and Lupin in our new home.
Q: What do you look forward to in your married life?
Wataru: I am truly happy to receive the support of many people and can’t wait to see their reaction when I tell them about our marriage and express my thanks to each of them with Midori. I look forward to finding gadgets and furniture we both like to use in the home and enjoying a stylish lifestyle with Midori and our dog.
Midori: We have only been able to introduce each other to our family and some friends, so I look forward to growing our shared community together. I am very thankful for all the words of support from across the world.
