21 August 2024Netflix hosted over 500 attendees for its first-ever accessibility premiere for a Chinese-language series in Taiwan, where audiences experienced the first two episodes of crime comedy series GG Precinct with Mandarin Audio Descriptions (AD) and Traditional Chinese Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH).
Speaking at the accessibility premiere, Daphne Cheng, Regional Language Manager - SEA, remarked, "Netflix believes that great stories should be enjoyed by everyone, without language barriers or sensory limitations. For the premiere today, we hope that our audience will be able to experience the series in their own terms through the audio description and contextual subtitles that describe the actions, expressions, costumes and scenes depicted in the episodes. GG Precinct is a series rich in both visual and auditory elements, and we are proud and excited to showcase these accessibility features through the title”.
Over the last year, Netflix has focused on increasing the total number of films and series supported by AD and SDH, and on expanding the language availability in AD and SDH, so that more members can enjoy great stories from around the world. In March last year, Netflix also introduced the ability to customize subtitles shown on TV that were previously only modifiable on the web, giving members more choice and control over selecting the size and style of the subtitles to best suit their needs .
