Today, Netflix announced the launch of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity in Mexico. This fund is part of a global initiative launched in 2021. With its introduction in the country, Netflix seeks to continue promoting what is made in Mexico and develop future Mexican audiovisual talents.

Together with organizations and institutions that already work towards a more diverse film and television industry, Netflix will support programs that identify, train and provide opportunities for talent that has not yet found its place in the sector.

Alejandra Serna, VP of Production for Netflix Latin America, shares: “The world has fallen in love with Mexico through its characters and stories, and Mexican creators have found in film and television a way to share their visions. For more than a decade, we have collaborated closely with them and today, as we celebrate Mexican Cinema Month, I am excited to announce the launch of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity. At Netflix, we believe in the importance of finding creators from all corners of the country and with diverse profiles to tell stories that reflect the richness and variety of Mexico.”

In an initial stage, the fund will support the following programs:

  • New Frontiers of Audiovisual Production in Mexico: Designed by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (AMACC) and Netflix, with the collaboration of Pimienta Films –the latter being the one who will implement it–, this is the first executive production training course in Mexico with a focus on diversity. The syllabus is made up of modules on current trends, artistic vision, production and financing models, legal issues, and innovation, among others. National and international experts will be special guests invited to share their experiences with the 30 participants.

  • Program with the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC): In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE), we (Netflix) and the CCC will develop a series of training courses and master classes at the new CCC campus in Chapultepec. The goal of this program is for participants to be better prepared for employment in the audiovisual industry. In addition, in the fall of this year, the CCC will launch a national call –with a focus on diversity and inclusion– for 30 people from diverse communities around the country to receive training as production assistants.

  • 2nd Film Project Development Lab for Indigenous and Afro-descendant Filmmakers from Latin America: We have strengthened our partnership with the Morelia Film Festival by becoming co-sponsors of this program, which is part of the activities of Morelia Pro, and will be held during the festival, from October 16 to 20, 2024. Its goal is to support the development of film projects by indigenous and Afro-descendant filmmakers, providing them with the necessary tools for production, as well as consulting on how to prepare the budget and financial schemes, advice on copyright and patrimonial rights, and recommendations for promotion, distribution and exhibition, among others.

The Netflix Fund for Creative Equity's mission is to help build new paths for diverse communities within entertainment; because each audiovisual production reflects the essence of those who participate in them.

These three projects join other Netflix efforts to help our industry reach its audiovisual potential and, in doing so, help Mexico be seen.
