Netflix Drops Main Trailer for Koji Yakusho’s Wildly Offbeat New Comedy ‘Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?’

Netflix has released the main trailer, key art, and cast stills for Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?, the new Japanese comedy series starring Koji Yakusho, premiering October 22.

The newly released main trailer opens on the bleak sight of Gen Takasegawa (Koji Yakusho), living out of a public park, reduced to near-homelessness. Once hailed as a legendary actor “known by every Japanese person,” Takasegawa returns to Japan only to face the shocking reality that 99% of the country — and even his own family — has completely forgotten who he is. Convinced everyone has some kind of mass amnesia, he’s stunned to be written off by officials as a senile old man. Stripped of his pride, Takasegawa is forced into a brutal restart from zero, muscling his way into other people’s auditions and film sets in a desperate bid to reclaim his former glory — clawing his way back up, one background role at a time.

Also featured is Tetsu Okamoto (Kento Kaku), who works part-time alongside Takasegawa at the Sauna Shirakaba while also running his own theater troupe, Whisky Bonbon Theater Company. Once thrust into the spotlight as a celebrated playwright, Okamoto now finds himself in a creative slump. There’s also veteran chief assistant director Kazuki Kawashima (Kenichi Matsuyama), who throws himself physically into the brutal realities of film production; Yoko Nonomura (Yoh Yoshida), president of the talent agency Takasegawa belonged to and also his ex-wife; Emma Nonomura (Yumi Kawai), the daughter of Takasegawa and Yoko, who works at a concept cafe; Takeru Murai (Hayato Isomura), the theater troupe’s star actor, whose self-absorbed and outrageous performances command attention; and popular actor Daiya Mibu (Masatoshi Hamada), who once clashed fiercely with Takasegawa as his longtime rival. 

Underscoring the adventures of this spectacular ensemble cast is the newly unveiled insert song, “It’s Okay,” performed in-story by Cho (Ken Yokoyama) & Chijimi (Maki Sakai), with lyrics by Kankuro Kudo and music by Ken Yokoyama.

Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? premieres October 22, only on Netflix.
