Children’s birthday parties are the best, aren’t they?

In her brother’s chic country house villa, single mother Marlene Frischmann (Jeanne Goursaud) has organized the perfect birthday party for her son Theo (Levin Wopp): balloons, gluten‑free cake, piñata and even wild animals are set to make it an unforgettable day. But the lovingly planned celebration suddenly escalates into a hilariously nightmarish mess – complete with heated debates about parenting, concepts of masculinity and parental principles.

Not entirely innocent in the chaos are Marlene’s brash banker brother Timo (Edin Hasanović), her eccentrically unhinged father Hans (Heiner Lauterbach), her colleague and idealistic world‑saver Jenny (Amal Keller), as well as one very special gift. Caught between dysfunctional family structures, pedantic helicopter moms and childlike anarchy, the party sinks deeper and deeper into chaos.

Filming on the biting yet warm‑hearted ensemble comedy Das Geschenk (WT) has been completed in Berlin. Director Vanessa Jopp directs Jeanne Goursaud, Edin Hasanović and Heiner Lauterbach in the leading roles in this UFA Fiction production based on a screenplay by Ben Brooks. Eric Bouley serves as producer, with Antonia Matthes as producer. Cinematography is by Bernhard Jasper. Production design is by Christian Schäfer. The cast also includes, among others, Sogol Faghani, Berit Künnecke, Enzo Brumm and Bastian Reiber.

Das Geschenk (WT) is expected to launch on Netflix in 2026.
