05 April 2022In November of 2012 Álex and Bruno, the main characters of Smiley, kissed for the first time in a small theater in Barcelona. The play jumped to the big mainstream theaters of the city, joining seasons until 2015, the year when the production in Madrid filled up 2 theaters. By that time the screenplay was already translated to several languages and until now it has been versionated in Germany, Greece, Chipre, Italy, Chile, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela, Miami, New York, Colombia, Australia and Singapour.
This week has started in Barcelona the shooting of the screen adaptation. Guillem Clua, author of the namesake play, plays the role of showrunner of this new fictional series, which has been directed by Marta Pahissa and David M. Porras and produced by Minoría Absoluta for Netflix. The cast is leaded by Miki Esparbé (The Innocent, Reyes de la noche) Carlos Cuevas (Someone Has to Die, Merlí), Pepón Nieto (Los hombres de Paco, 30 monedas), Meritxell Calvo (Love in Difficult Times, Lifeline), Giannina Fruttero (La jauría, Ema), Eduardo Lloveras (Intimacy, The One), Ruth Llopis (Durante la tormenta, Valeria) and Ramon Pujol (Ciega a citas, El perfume: historia de un asesino).
In Smiley, Álex (Carlos Cuevas) is heartbroken. He was building fantasies with a boy that, a couple of weeks later, disappeared giving him a perfect ghosting. And he is really upset because of it. He picks up the phone and asks out for an explanation in a voicemail that will have unexpected consequences… because he ends up sending it by mistake to Bruno (Miki Esparbé), who he doesn’t know at all. This innocent first misleading is the first one in a chain of events that will change Alex and Bruno’s life forever.
“Smiley is the biggest love story that I’ve ever lived. And as it often happens with love stories, it started with something really tiny and it has been growing through the years until it has become something that has changed my life. During this whole time Smiley has touched the souls of thousands of people in theaters all over the world and it makes me very happy that it can keep doing it from a streaming platform that is so proud of the diversity as Netflix. Not only because Álex and Bruno’s story will reach millions of people more, but because the two of them will be joined by a whole new universe of LGTBI love stories. That’s why I say Smiley is my biggest love story. And the best thing is that it just has started”, Guillem Clua, Smiley’s creator and showrunner, has claimed.
