Netflix announced today the release of its new film Swim To Me, directed by Dominga Sotomayor ("Too Late to Die Young," "Thursday till Sunday"). The acclaimed Chilean filmmaker serves as the director and co-writer of the film adaptation of the award-winning book by Alia Trabucco Zerán. The feature is a gripping family drama that tells the story of the intense relationship between Estela, a domestic worker, and the six-year-old girl she cares for day and night.
In addition to confirming its release date, Swim To Me unveiled its first images, main art, and announced its world premiere on September 19 at the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it will open the Horizontes Latinos competition section.
Swim To Me marks the first literary adaptation by director Dominga Sotomayor, who expressed her interest in the story: "I was deeply moved by the relationship between Estela and Julia —a woman and a child who are not family— observing how, in that house, affection and power, care and violence intersect. This film was a way for me to reflect on and also unsettle myself in the face of a society where first and second-class citizens still exist."
Filmed in Chile, with a screenplay by Dominga Sotomayor and Argentine writer Gabriela Larralde ("Elena Knows"), the movie is a cinematic adaptation of the award-winning novel by Chilean author Alia Trabucco Zerán (Best Foreign Novel, Prix Femina 2024). Produced by Fabula, Swim To Me stars María Paz Grandjean, Rosa Puga Vittini, Ignacia Baeza Hidalgo, Benjamín Westfall, and Rodrigo Palacios.
Swim To Me will be available in select cinemas in Chile on September 25 and globally on Netflix on October 10.
