20 May 2023For the first time in Asia, Netflix is hosting a multi-title pop-up event in Tokyo that lets fans immerse themselves in some of the most popular Netflix shows, from global hits like Stranger Things to local favorites such as First Love.
The Only On Netflix event, which runs for a month from today, is divided into two journeys. The ‘Love’ route offers visitors the opportunity to experience the romantic nostalgia of First Love, promenade through Regency-era gardens inspired by Bridgerton, and envision their perfect first date à la Emily in Paris. On the ‘Adventure’ route, visitors can enter Nevermore with Wednesday, jump into the Upside Down of Stranger Things, or play a game to survive in Alice in Borderland. There are even specially curated Love and Adventure playlists on Spotify to let visitors relive all their favorite moments.
In Japan where there’s a fandom for just about everything—from manga to video games to trains—Netflix has also gained a devoted following in the country.
"Through Only On Netflix, we're here to celebrate all entertainment fans in Japan," says Kaata Sakamoto, Vice President of Content for Japan at Netflix. "We wanted to make sure there’s something for everyone. Whether you're in the mood for romance or adventure, we've got you covered."
Fans can also explore the Weekly Features area, which offers sneak peeks of upcoming shows like the ONE PIECE live-action series, hotly anticipated anime titles, swoon-worthy K-Romance and must-watch unscripted series. For the first time globally, fans of ONE PIECE will be able to see specially selected props from the upcoming ONE PIECE live action series on display from 20 May to 28 May.
Exclusive branded merchandise is available for purchase alongside themed food and beverage options. Visitors can enjoy Surfer Boy Pizza (in collaboration with PIZZANISTA! TOKYO), iconic Scoops Ahoy ice cream cones (in collaboration with Harlow ICE CREAM), and hot steaming mugs of coffee from the First Love coffee stand.
The event is also a celebration of how audiences are embracing Japanese content on Netflix — both locally and around the world. Sports drama Sanctuary has featured in the Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) list for two weeks since its premiere earlier this month.
Sakamoto is particularly proud of Alice in Borderland, which became the most-watched Japanese show ever on Netflix when Season Two was released in December 2022 reaching the Top 10 in over 90 countries. The fandom around Netflix titles continues to impact Japanese culture, with First Love spurring the iconic song it was based on to see a 300% increase in streaming on Spotify and hitting the top spot on Apple Music following the series release.
"The global popularity for our recent titles is testament to the fact that great stories can come from anywhere and be loved everywhere," he says. "We're thrilled to be able to tell Japanese stories which resonate with fans both in Japan and around the world.
“Even within the variety of shows represented at Only On Netflix, you can see that there’s a show for every fan, and every mood, making Netflix the go-to destination for your entertainment.”
For Netflix fans in Japan, Only On Netflix is a chance to experience their beloved shows in a whole new way. And for Netflix, it's a way to celebrate the passion and community which fans bring together around our titles.
Only On Netflix will run until June 11, 2023, at Q Plaza, Harajuku. Register for a complimentary ticket on www.oonjp.com.
