Link copied to clipboardProduction of Vinterviken 2021 has started in Stockholm, Sweden. The Swedish language film is a co-production between Filmlance, Netflix and Sveriges Television and will be a modern adaptation of Mats Wahl's acclaimed novel Vinterviken. Today Netflix announced the new cast.
The story is set in Stockholm 2021 and focuses on the love story between Elisabeth and John-John. The two youngsters are raised in the same city, yet they live light years apart, separated economically, socially and culturally. That is until the day they start in the same high school class.
Elsa Öhrn is making her acting debut and will play Elisabeth. John-John is portrayed by newcomer Mustapha Aarab. The film also stars Magnus Krepper, Loreen, Marika Lagercrantz, Albin Grenholm, Otto Hargne, Simon Mezher, Jonay Pineda Skallak and Elsa Bergström Terent.
Elsa Öhrn says: “It feels exciting to be part of this new version of Vinterviken where the overall societal problems are the same - but adapted to present time. I am thrilled to work with such a creative team with so many talented people of all ages. Elisabeth feels more complex in this version and the contrasts between her and John-John are even more present - but that's probably why they are drawn to each other.”
Mustapha Aarab says: “The original film really touched me in many ways and I hope this new version will both shine a light on important topics in society and at the same time entertain. I am really proud to be part of this film and can’t wait to share it with my family, friends and the Netflix viewers across the globe.”
Vinterviken 2021 will be produced by Filmlance International, part of Banijay, with Teresa Alldén as producer and Alexis Almström as director. Dunja Vujovic serves as the screenwriter. The three of them have previously collaborated on Top Dog, a TV series based on Jens Lapidus trilogy.
Vinterviken 2021 will release globally on Netflix in 2021 and on Sveriges Television in 2022.
About Elsa Öhrn and Mustapha Aarab
Elsa Öhrn - 17 years
Vinterviken is Elsa Öhrn's acting debut. Elsa was born and raised in Södermalm, Stockholm, and has set her sights on working with film and theatre since she was young. After studying musical performance at Kulturama, she started the theatre programme at Södra Latins gymnasium in Stockholm, where she will soon commence her second year.
Mustapha Aarab - 16 years
Mustapha Aarab will soon begin his first year at Fryshuset's high school in Stockholm. Mustapha, originally from Agadir in Morocco, moved to Sweden three years ago. He made his acting debut in the TV series Björnstad - and it sparked his deeper interest in acting.
