07 August 2025An action-packed, adrenaline-fueled story that deals with powerful and hard-hitting issues: Rivers of Fate, a Brazilian miniseries directed by Quico Meirelles, with an episode directed by Fernando Meirelles (Oscar-nominated for City of God) revealed a special behind-the-scenes video today, ahead of its August 20 premiere on Netflix. The exclusive content reveals details of filming in Belém do Pará, and features interviews with the directors and stars – Domithila Cattete (Janalice), Marleyda Soto (Mariangel), and Lucas Galvino (Preá) – who talk about the development of the characters, filming on location in the Atlantic forest, and the human dimension of the story.
"There's something about the adrenaline rush in the miniseries, the frenzy with which things happen, that leaves the audience breathless," comments Quico Meirelles. "People will feel a lot of emotions when they watch Rivers of Fate . It's a story of great hope. It is important to share it so that stories like these don't keep repeating themselves," concludes Domithila Cattete.
Based on a book by the Paraense writer Edyr Augusto, Rivers of Fate is produced by Andrea Barata Ribeiro, who read the book and felt an immediate need to share with more people. The series takes a deep dive into an intense and immersive experience in northern Brazil, telling the story of characters whose lives intertwine in unexpected ways on the rivers of the Atlantic Forest: Janalice, a young woman kidnapped by human traffickers; Preá, who needs to come to terms with his fate as the leader of a gang of “water rats” (criminals who operate on the region's rivers); and Mariangel, who seeks revenge for the death of her family. All these characters try to survive the curse they believe has been placed upon them.
The miniseries was created and written by Bráulio Mantovani (Oscar-nominated for City of God), Fernando Garrido, and Stephanie Degreas. Produced by Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Fernando Meirelles, and co-produced by Cristina Abi, from O2 Filmes. Other members of the cast include David Santos, Welket Bungué, Ademara, Bruno Goya, Maycon Douglas, Luca Dan, Claudio Jaborandy, Ricardo Teodoro, Sandro Guerra, Felipe Rocha, Wesley Guimarães, Gabriel Knoxx, Ana Luiza Rios, and Sendí Baré.
