11 December 2023We have introduced a new feature on the Netflix ISP Speed Index, which measures prime time Netflix streaming experience on particular Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the globe. You will now notice a line on each country or region’s histogram chart that tracks the best achieved ISP speed globally for each month. As we continue to roll out more efficient encodes, Netflix devices need smaller bitrates on average for the same or better quality streams, corresponding to reduced speeds on the ISP Speed Index. Top-performing ISPs will closely match up to this new line.
We have rolled out a new encode structure in Brazil that will show a shift down in speeds. With this update in the baseline for Brazil, their histogram will be restarted from this month and exclude past numbers. Brazil will also be excluded from the country / regions averages page.
Three countries and regions were in the top performance tier for November: Hong Kong, Singapore, and Spain all registered an average speed of 3.2 Mbps.
Ninety-seven percent of ISPs stayed the same or moved down 0.2 Mbps in November due to bitrate encoding efficiencies. Telkom in South Africa went up 0.2 Mbps, rising from 2.4 to 2.6 Mbps. ISPs in both Jamaica and Vietnam dropped 0.4 Mbps this month. Flow in Jamaica fell from 3.0 to 2.6 Mbps. Saigontourist Cable Television in Vietnam dropped from 2.8 to 2.4 Mbps. Jamaica was the only country to register an overall decrease in speed of 0.4 Mbps since October’s results, with its average speed falling from 3.0 to 2.6 Mbps.
The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services or data that may travel across the specific ISP network. Higher Netflix performance generally means better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions. We also created a separate tool to check your current download performance: Visit https://FAST.com on any internet browser or download the FAST Speed Test iOS or Android app.
