Netflix has announced today the start of production on the film La Regenta, an adaptation of the classic Spanish novel by Leopoldo Alas, “Clarín”. This new contemporary version is brought to life by a creative team that reinterprets the classic from a fresh female perspective, with Mar Coll (Salve Maria, Three Days with the Family) directing, María Zamora (Salve Maria, Romería) producing, and Ester Expósito (Elite, The Talent) leading the cast as Regenta.

The cast is rounded off by Oriol Pla (I, Addict, The Day After Tomorrow) as Magistral Fermín de Pas, Vito Sanz (Por cien millones, Billionaires’ Bunker) as Victor Quintanar, Borja Luna (Breathless, No Traces) as Álvaro Mesía, Clara Ingold (Little Faith, Iron Reign) as Petra, Carlos González (La bola negra, Amar es para siempre) as Frígilis, Ana Torrent (Rage, Thesis) as Doña Paula, Itsaso Arana (The Other Way Around, The girls at the back) as Visitación, and Gonzalo de Castro (The final problem, The Inmortal) as Ripamilán, among others.

Ana Ozores, la Regenta, lives a comfortable but empty marriage with Víctor Quintanar in the stifling city of Vetusta, where everything is known and everything is judged. Beautiful and unfulfilled, Ana searches for a meaning in her life that her surroundings won’t allow her to reach. Without intending to, she becomes the center of two opposing obsessions. What begins as a private crisis becomes a silent struggle between desire, faith and social power, where Ana’s every move is watched, judged and used by those around her.

La Regenta is directed by Mar Coll, who also co-writes the screenplay alongside Anna R. Costa and Diego Vega. The film is produced by María Zamora for Elastica Films, marking the company’s first collaboration with Netflix.

In Mar Coll’s words: “Clarín’s novel is so rich that dozens of different adaptations can be made from it, like those that came before ours or those that will follow it. I have tried to approach the material, humbly, from a radically personal perspective, as I always do. I have made my own what has moved me most in the novel, and what explores the loneliness and heartbreak of this regent’s wife, who tirelessly longs for to give meaning to her life. a more real life. A luminous character inhabiting a universe poised to prey on her. A woman whose sensitivity and stubborn search constitute, in themselves, a form of resistance.”
