Throughout my more than two decade career in the film industry, I have been working with and advocating for artists from historically underrepresented communities.
While there is a lot of work that still needs to be done, I am encouraged and inspired by steps that are being made.
The programs that Netflix has funded over the last several years, like Inside Out’s Film Finance Forum, support the development and inclusion of emerging creators from underrepresented communities, and are critical to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to see their lives reflected on-screen. Like many of the filmmakers I regularly speak with, the creators in this video have faced challenges, but they are also hopeful for the future.
It’s vital to create these pathways, both in front and behind the camera, for Canadians of all backgrounds and empower them to tell their own unique and rich stories. Storytelling matters, and who gets to tell those stories matters even more.
