Social Impact
31 March 2023Last year we launched our partnership with the Ukrainian Film Academy and House of Europe, a programme funded by the European Union, to help Ukrainian professionals in the film and TV industry impacted by the Russian invasion.
To date these programmes have supported 100 professionals with stipends for creative purposes and over 400 have received access to digital education to help them grow their filmmaking skills. Additionally, to foster work on creative projects, 48 two-person teams received script development grants and online sessions with international industry experts.
Over the last few months 9 of those projects have already found international production partners, 4 have secured additional donor funding and 1 won the “Best Project Award” at the Series Mania co-pitching session, an unprecedented success for a Ukrainian project. More have been selected for presentations at various film festivals across the world, including Berlinale, Göteborg Film Festival and WATCH DOCS International Film Festival.
“Thanks to the script development grant financed by the Ukrainian Film Academy, in partnership with Netflix, we now have the script of the first 3 episodes and the Bible. And of course the series deck. It was an honor for us to present the first Ukrainian high-concept series in co-production with Poland at the highest-profile TV industry event in Europe. It was an even bigger honor for us to receive the Series Mania Forum Best Project Award. It gives us an opportunity to boost the development of the Unspoken series, to bring it to the next level of story-telling and to involve the major players in the series industry” - said Producer and recipient of one of the grants, Dmytro Sukhanov.
This year we are continuing our partnerships to help develop the skills of Ukrainian film and TV creators and support their creative projects. These initiatives, supported by Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity, will offer financial assistance to Ukrainian creators through a further 100 stipends for creative purposes as well as grants for post-production, with applications launching later this year.
Additionally, the collaboration will include two new partners - the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE) and the New York Film Academy - providing additional access to knowledge and training to hundreds of professionals in various industry roles through a series of digital masterclasses covering all aspects of a co-production project lifespan and a two day digital post-production workshop.
Similarly to the previous year, every Ukrainian creator, regardless of their location, can apply for these initiatives. Extending our partnership with two new international institutions will offer even more opportunities for creators to learn new skills and develop their careers in the film and TV industry on the international stage.
