30 June 2025Netflix has announced today the end of filming for El niño, the new film written and directed by Mariano Barroso (Ecstasy, All the Women, The Invisible Line) and starring Goya Award winners Belén Cuesta (The Endless Trench, Money Heist) and Karra Elejalde (Spanish Affair, While at War). The feature film, which has wrapped shooting in Madrid after filming in various locations in the Basque Country, is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Fernando Aramburu and is produced by Mariano Barroso and Rafael Portela.
Inspired by true events, El niño tells the story of Mariaje (Belén Cuesta) and Nicasio (Karra Elejalde), the mother and grandfather of one of the children who died in the gas explosion in a town in Vizcaya in October 1980. This tragedy shocked the town and all of Spain, and changed their lives forever. Our protagonists refuse to accept the tragedy. In a journey of discovery and resilience, full of unexpected emotions, Mariaje and Nicasio search for—and find—their own unique way to overcome their loss.
