When Netflix brings you a series that reflects your own life or a film that offers you a portal into the lives of people around the world, it takes a network that runs on energy. This energy footprint has changed a bit since our last update, so we thought we’d fill you in on the latest.
We remain committed to reducing our environmental impact from electricity use - and we’re happy to report that we are making good progress on this. For the electricity we use ourselves -- like in our own offices or DVD warehouses -- we use as little as possible, and then match 100% of our direct power with regional renewable energy certificates (RECs). In 2018, Netflix’s direct energy use was about 51,000 megawatt hours (MWhs).
Then, there’s the electricity we don’t use ourselves but is required to deliver Netflix to you. This is called indirect electricity use and includes energy from companies we work with like Amazon Web Services and internet service providers. Although this part of our energy footprint is more difficult to influence since we don’t actually have control over it, we still try to make sure it’s as sustainable as possible. In that vein, we work with our service providers to measure and report this electricity use and then match it with regional RECs and carbon offsets. This indirect energy use was approximately 194,000 MWhs in 2018.
In 2018, 100% of our estimated direct and indirect non-renewable power use was matched through the following renewable energy and carbon offset projects. These projects span 23 different states/regions and 16 different countries.
US Renewable Energy Projects in:

- New Mexico
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Pennsylvania New Jersey Maryland (PJM)
- South Dakota
International Renewable Energy Projects in:
- EU (AIB)
While this approach works for the scale of our energy use at the moment, we are still relative newcomers on this journey. We constantly evaluate our environmental impact and explore new opportunities to further our sustainability efforts. For now, you can find us reporting through the EPA’s Green Power Partner program.
Beyond our renewable energy commitments, we also work to be as sustainable as we can in our day to day operations, including using compostable products, donating excess food, and reducing our single use plastics. In addition, we actively encourage our employees to implement sustainability initiatives at home and in their personal lives.
Most importantly, we’re inspired by the power of all the great storytellers we’ve met who are inspiring sustainability values for Netflix fans around the world through entertainment.
