01 August 2023São Paulo, August 1, 2023 - In 2008, 5-year-old Isabella Nardoni's case shocked Brazil. The girl had been thrown from the window of the São Paulo apartment where her father and stepmother lived. While the public, the media, and even the authorities sought a quick fix that would serve as an example, the official investigation looked for ways to determine what had happened. How was the investigation carried out? What evidence supported the idea that the Nardonis were to blame? Why did the police rule out all other possibilities? Fifteen years later, the documentary A Life Too Short: The Isabella Nardoni Case will be released on Netflix on August 17. The documentary explores a case that touched many Brazilians, reveals little-known details, and includes never-before-seen testimony from Isabella's mother and two grandparents, who are fighting to keep her memory alive. Journalists, investigators and defense attorneys also are heard from.
“This film reflects on our society, on criminal justice – actually, on our system as a whole – and also on sensationalism. That's on top of retelling a story that should never be forgotten. That little girl would be 21 if she were here with us, studying for a degree and planning out her future,” says Claudio Manoel, who directed the film alongside Micael Langer.
Produced by Kromaki for Netflix, the documentary was executive produced by Rodrigo Letier, Manfredo Barretto, Roberta Oliveira and Anna Julia Werneck. The script is by Claudio Manoel, Micael Langer and Felipe Flexa. Consultants include Rogério Pagnan, who wrote O pior dos crimes – A história do assassinato de Isabella Nardoni, and criminologist Ilana Casoy, author of both A prova é a testemunha e Casos de família – Arquivos Richthofen e Arquivos Nardoni. The team also reviewed more than 6,000 pages from the trial, recorded 118 hours of interview footage, and gathered more than 5,000 archival photographs from the media and the family.
