Netflix has announced today the title of its new project produced by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi ('The Messiah', 'Veneno', 'Paquita Salas') for Suma Content.

Superestar is the name of the new fiction created by Nacho Vigalondo ('The Neighbor', 'Time Crimes', 'Colossal'), a series that will focus on the artistic beginnings of the well-known singer Yurena, who became known as Tamara, a phenomenon who became a true popular icon in the early 2000s after the release of the song No cambié and her later album Superestar. It is the re-imagining of tamarism from the heart of its protagonists.

This production will have 6 episodes directed by Nacho Vigalondo and Claudia Costafreda ('Cardo') and written by Nacho Vigalondo, María Bastarós, Paco Bezerra and Claudia Costafreda.

"There is nothing we like more than pop and looking back at the history of our country. If there was a wild era when everything was possible, it was the era of tamarism, when the most unexpected protagonists monopolized hours and hours of television," says Javier Calvo. When you're faced with a series based on real events, the most important thing is to find the point of view. Superestar has found it, thanks to the brilliant and crazy mind of its creator, Nacho Vigalondo. Behind the series is a vessel of talents like I have rarely seen before. It is a tribute to an era in Spain that deserves to be revisited. As producers, we are thrilled to share this journey with Netflix," adds Javier Ambrossi.

Nacho Vigalondo, who was nominated for an Oscar for his short film '7:35 in the morning', is the creator, script writer and director of Superestar, along with Claudia Costafreda. “One of the greatest fortunes I've had in my career has been the creative complicity with Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, and this series is the culmination of that equation, that incredible talents such as Claudia Costafreda, Maria Bastarós and Paco Bezerra have projected to the stars. In Superestar, we wanted to understand, humanize and respect a set of characters who are usually mistreated, and in the process we created a dump of fantasy and magic that is unlike anything we have ever seen," says Nacho Vigalondo.

About 'Superstar'

At the turn of the century, a comet crossed the Spanish sky, shattering the laws of fame and success and dissolving the line between the popular and the underground. For a few years, the front pages and prime time were taken over by celebrities from another dimension. Creatures who, until then, seemed condemned to ridicule and contempt, who caught our attention without adapting to any kind of normality. A magical story with room for esoteric conspiracies, eternal nights, quantum bricks, multicolored supervillains and an improbability made star: Tamara.
