On June 6, the first episode of Season 2 had its world premiere at the Seriencamp festival in Cologne. In the new digital press kit, directors Isabel Braak and Nina Vukovic, production and costume designers Isabel von Forster and Ramona Klinikowski, and showrunner/writer team HaRiBo discuss their work on Season 2 of the series about former Stasi secret agent Kleo Straub. Kleo's continued quest for the red suitcase and its explosive files, which shed an entirely different light on the upheavals in Europe in the early 1990s, takes her to Moscow via Belgrade. It almost goes without saying that Sven Petzold (Dimitrij Schaad) gets in her way—or does he lend a hand?
The press kit contains exclusive insight into the production, including:
Jella and liverwurst: To better motivate the standard poodle to heel in Episode 1, Jella Haase smeared a bit of liverwurst on her knee. And it worked: The poodle literally clung to her leg.
Dimitrij's passion for suits: Dimitrij Schaad wanted to keep his casual Miami Vice-style suits as souvenirs. However, the costume designer wouldn't have it and mothballed his wardrobe—in anticipation of a possible third season.
KLEOS's soundtrack: The songs played in KLEO are selected by the showrunners while they are working on the script. They listen to the songs for inspiration during the writing process. For the Russian songs, they chose anti-war anthems to make a deliberate statement.
Design inspiration: For costume designer Ramona Klinikowski, Kleo combines the styles of Katharina Witt and Nina Hagen. She drew inspiration from designers who epitomize this vibe and were popular in the early 1990s, including Yohji Yamamoto, Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier, as well as more recent influences such as Kill Bill.
About KLEO Season 2
The hunt for the red suitcase continues: former East German spy Kleo is determined to get the red suitcase back and destroy it for good. Sven intends to do everything he can to redeem himself in Kleo's eyes and work with her again. It's apparent that she gives him a bit of an adrenaline rush in his work as a police officer.
The red suitcase's contents play a key role in the reorganization of Germany and Europe in the wake of the Cold War, so it’s no wonder that the KGB and CIA are also after it. Both secret services target Kleo, who's at the center of all the action. But there's more: while Europe’s future is in Kleo’s hands, she's more intensely confronted with her own past than she would like.
